Repair & Troubleshooting

One zone dead? We find out why.

Troubleshooting a zone that will not turn on, runs weakly or runs all the time, by testing the controller, wire, solenoid, valve and line in order.

  • Test order: Signal, voltage, solenoid, valve, line
  • Common causes: Wire, solenoid, valve, line
  • Tools: Multimeter, wire tracer, pressure gauge

The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

When a single zone fails, the controller usually works, since other zones run. That narrows it to the wire, the solenoid, the valve, the line or the heads. We test each in sequence: signal at the controller, voltage at the valve, solenoid resistance, flow through the valve and line integrity.

In Nashville yards, the usual answer is a nicked wire from a shovel, a failed solenoid or a valve clogged with debris. Once we find it, we repair it, label the wiring and tell you how to spot early warning signs of the next failure.

Good questions

Zone Not Working: common questions

Why does one sprinkler zone not come on?

The most common reasons are a broken wire, a failed solenoid, a stuck valve or a broken line. Testing in order finds which.

Could the controller be the problem?

Yes, though it is less common if other zones run. We test the station output to rule it out.
