Keep the slope where you put it.
Swales, drains, matting, planting and drip that slow runoff and hold soil on slopes, plus irrigation plans that do not wash them out.
- Tools: Swales, matting, planting, drip
- Irrigation: Drip and cycle-and-soak on slopes
- Goal: Slow, spread, hold

What it is, and why it matters.
Slopes erode when water moves fast. The fix is to slow it down, spread it out and give soil something to hold. Small swales, rock-lined channels, erosion-control blanket and deep-rooted planting all do that. And irrigation matters: overhead spray on a slope runs off before it soaks in, while drip and low-precipitation nozzles with short cycles soak in without moving soil.
In Nashville's hills, we plan irrigation and drainage together: where water arrives from the roof and street, where it needs to go and how new plantings get established without washing out. We keep the result natural looking.

Erosion & Slope Water Control: common questions
How do I water a sloped lawn without runoff?
Use low-precipitation nozzles and short cycles with soak time between them, or drip in beds. The water soaks in instead of running off.
Can plants alone stop erosion?
On gentle slopes often yes. Steeper slopes need structure like swales and matting too.
