Key takeaways

- Look for broken heads, geysers, soggy spots and dry stripes.
- Reset the controller for the season.
Turning the water on
Open the supply valve slowly so the lines fill without a pressure surge. Close the drain valves you opened for winter. Check the backflow device and valves for leaks.
If the backflow is above ground, open its test cocks and valves in the right order.
Running the zones
Run each zone for a minute or two and watch. Look for heads that do not pop up, spray in the wrong direction, are clogged or are sprinkling pavement. Notice wet spots or puddles that suggest a broken line. Adjust, clean and replace as needed.
Check that the rain sensor works by pressing its test button.
Programming
Update the date and time and set the schedule for the season. Spring needs much less water than summer. A smart controller adjusts automatically, but a basic timer needs you to change it as the weather warms.
